To Web Site or Not To Website

That be the question. Hey ya'all. So now there is lot's of activity on this Blog, lot's of content being found and shared, and new folks popping up every day. I have a question for everyone.

I shared at the reunion that I was thinking about starting a HML Band Alumni website with Blogging, Gallaries, Directory Services, annoucements and whatever you folks would like to see there.

So before I incur the expense to acquire a url and a hosting service capable of the potential traffic I want to make sure this is something you folks would like or is this blogspot sufficient. Having our own website would provide great flexibility for us since we'll "own" the content and design, be able to secure areas to members that we feel necessary, as well as allow us to continuing growing.

Thoughts and comments?

I think all of this is over my head. What would be the difference in layman's terms?

Hey Sugar Cookie! In layman's terms...

The web hosting service I have in mind that several of my collegues using allows a tremendous amount of flexibility to design and administer the site.

For example, it use's WordPress as a blogging engine (some examples can be seen at (http://www.sandiegozoo.org/wordpress/ or http://beccary.com/) which should make finding and responding blogs faster and easier.

More importantly, the biggest challenge we have on this blog is all the photos are getting posted to blog threads. That's fine to see them day by day as they come in. But as new people come in or you want to go back and look several months from now you would have to dig through the archives and then all the threads to find the pictures.

If we have our own website we can create galleries sorted by years, classes, special events, etc...

Also, we can other content such as a password protected directory, resource links, music of the day mp3's - pretty much whatever we like....

Does that help?

I think it sounds great. The thing with the pictures IS a problem. And, the archives kind of get annoying too. If you really want to do this, I say it's a good idea.

Eric, this sounds like a great idea. You have brought up some very good points...i like the idea of the gallery. With the calender we can keep track of special events, anniveries, b-days, sunday afternoon BBQs.

I don't know much about 'web hosting' or what it entails, but would most definately contribute! Some of you guys seem to know alot about this, so if you think it is do-able lets got for it!!!

I pretty much sit in front of a computer all day with very little to do (dare I admit that??) and would be more than amenable to helping run it or whatever...I'm not too sure what that might entail, but I'm game!

Peter, currently the $$$'s needed are minimial based on band-width, disk space, etc...

If it ever got to a point of being a burden we could lool at ways to make it self-funding through minimal advertising and fund-raising.

But not now...more concerned getting the pieces in place.

E!

you said you needed to put some pieces into place, eric. If you need anything from me, please let me know.
