Your memories of September 11th
Where were you when you heard the news about the bombings on September 11th, 6 years ago today?
What do you remember of those days afterwards, your thoughts and fears for our country.
Headquarters, Air Intelligence Agency Comm center wiring a T1. Immediately the concrete barricades were put at the entrances and at the front gate of the base. 100% ID check and threat con charlie. 100% vehicle checks at the gate. 2 HUMMVee's with .50 cal machine guns at the gate. and oh yeah 12 hour shifts! it took 4 hours for me to get to work the next morning!
Actually I was supposed to be on a plane that fateful day... on my way to the desert... but it was cancelled a couple weeks before the 9/11 thing.
I was teaching a class of 4th and 5th graders and vividly remember their reactions to what they were seeing on television. They were so afraid. Parents ran to the school to get their kids out and the principal had to do read lists of names all day over the loud speaker of the kids who were leaving early. We under a "code red" which meant that all windows were shut and doors were locked. No one was allowed to leave without an escort from security.
I also remember trying to find my aunt and uncle for hours. My aunt works in the United Nations and my uncle worked in the Trade Center. Thank God he was late for work and was not in the building at the time.
Disbelief, shock , horror, anger, sadness...I fell most folks had a wide range of emontions that morning.
Myself I was 'on sabatical' having finished packup up our trailer on the Tennessee River (hence no satelite) and was heading back to Big D to contemplate re-entering the work force...so I was on the road when I got word.
Given that me and my closest friends were not working - we may have dodged a bullet (or at least several days of being stranded somewhere) cause most liekly I would have been on a plane that day. I knew in my heart that most people would be touched by this is some awful way and that the world had indeed changed.
As for myself, while many of my professional friends had stories of being stranded (some even New York bound) the Todd Beamer struck a chord with me. While I didn't know Todd personally, I worked for his Daddy, Dave Beamer, and was actually contemplating working for him again.
and while it touched our family closely in a sad way I think it inspired many people as well to help in ways they could outside of the unbelieveable heroics in NY.
I know it was a turning point for my daugther who was 10 at the time. She was shy, intraverted, shielded. After hearing about my connection with Todd's Dad, she overcame those qualities and went outside of her comfort zone and canvased the neighborhood to raise hundreds of dollars for the Todd Beamer foundation. Since then she has become more outwardly focused on ways she can help individuals in need.
I have no doubt that this event spawned millions of stories like this...

Yeah, it was a stressfull time.
I remember trying to get ahold of ANYONE that I knew in New York.
From when I worked in the modeling biz, I still have a lot of friends that live in Manhattan.
Thank goodness they all turned out ok.
I remember being glued to my computer, tv and radio trying to get updates and just wondering what else would happen.
