The Basement

I'll admit it. I anxiously awaited for Wednesday, December 20th, to come. Why? Rocky VI was opening. Yes, it's true. And, I have to say, it was awesome! If you liked the first one, you're going to love this one. It is very true to the original.

There was one quote from the movie that has stayed with me. It's where Rocky says, " I think I still got something left in the basement." He was referring to how he's not finished yet-not too old. He still had some things he wanted to do in life.

Now, I know we aren't close to 60, but here's the question: What's in your basement? What would you still like to do?

The Grove

Who would think that one of the best things to do on a Saturday night was drive or walk around in circles? But, that is exactly what we did, isn't it? The car I went in, was always full of girls. We drove around and around, hung out the windows, and shouted crazy things at people. Then, we parked the car and continued the mayhem on foot. What fun! The goal was to see and be seen. Of course, for you lucky ones, who didn't have a 12:00 curfew, you were able to go to Rocky Horror.

So, what other memories do you have of the Grove?

A Fish Tale

Last night, some of us finally met the notorious Fish and his wife, Ada at our Christmas party. What a great couple of people. He shared some really funny stories, like the one where some of you guys tormented Mr. Walters by putting water in the French Horn right before it was to be played in a solo. Hmm, I wonder who did that? Fish wouldn't say.

Karen C. and Robin were also there for the first time looking (and behaving) exactly the way they did back in the day. It was so much fun watching band-ees be band-ees. The excitement grew as more and more people showed up. And, even though some of us couldn't make it in person, there were plenty of phone calls and texts back and forth with updates on what was going on. I can't wait until the next time.

And the Most Memorable Goes To

For me, 2006 was very memorable. It seems strange that at this time last year, we didn't know where half of us were, we weren't talking, and forget about hanging out together. What a difference a year makes. What has been the most memorable band moment for you this year?

All I want for Christmas...

Well, what is it? What do YOU want for Christmas?

Monday, December 11, 2006

Just a little bit.

People come and go. And, whether we want to admit it or not, they influence us. They can influence us to be good or bad. Even people we wouldn't consider our friends leave an impression on us. Everyone does. Who in the past would you have to admit influenced you and how?

Diversions

When I get bored, anxious, stressed out, whatever, I seem to end up in my car. I love to go really fast with the music very loud, and the windows open. What are some of the things you like to do?

Friday, December 08, 2006

Things that make you go, hmmmmm.

My brain is full of strange facts. I'm sure I am not the only one. Read some of the ones I know, and add some of your own.

Christmas Tree Sale

I was driving home from work last night and passed a Christmas Tree Lot.

I remember working the Tree lot at HML.

What are some of your favorite memories of working at the tree lot???

Sunday, December 03, 2006

Now that's HOT!

A group of friends and I were talking, and an interesting topic came up. Clothing. We talked about what the sexiest outfit the opposite sex could wear. You would be amazed at the variety of responses.

What would it be for you?

A Full Life

When Jose Marti named the things that every man ought to do before he dies, he said: Plant a tree, write a book, have a son. That's a great start. Any other suggestions?

You ate what?!

For some reason, at our family get-togethers, the topic of conversation for the older people always seems to come back to three topics: Cuba, old music and musicians, and all of the strange things they have eaten. According to their stories, they have eaten rabbit, horse, goat, and even iguana. The strangest thing I ever heard was picadillo from a plantain peel. I know, gross.

What has been the strangest thing you have ever eaten?

Tropical vs. Westland

If you ever went, then you know exactly what I'm talking about-skating. Most of my most favorite memories happened at the skating rink. We used to go two to three times a week. Everything happened there. Girls had to have a brush and a cherry-flavored lip gloss in their back pocket. Boys wore really tight jeans and had "tejas," or mullets. The music was unbelievable. Did any of you go? What do you remember the most about going skating? Did you wear hockeys or speed skates? Which one did you prefer, Tropical or Westland?

Ruined Songs

There's a new website called, "ruinedsongs.com." The premise of the site is for people to write the names of songs that have been ruined for them for whatever reason and why. One girl wrote that she could no longer listen to some Mariah Carey song because it was her and an ex's "song." Another person told about how a song was ruined for him because he performed it at a school talent show and was ridiculed for his singing. Although the writing on the site is long-winded, it does pose an interesting question:

What song can you not bear to listen to and why?

Home Remedies

My grandmother had a home remedy for everything. No matter what problem I had, Abuela had the solution. For example, if my foot would fall asleep, she would make me "agua de berenjena," or eggplant water. Yes, you read that right. She would boil an eggplant and have me drink the water to improve my circulation. If I was tired, she'd pull down my bottom eyelids to see if there were enough veins on my eyes, and if there weren't, she'd have me drink beets with orange juice, to cure my anemia. Even my eyecolor was "given" to me by her. She would squeeze one lemon drop into each eye every once in awhile, to make sure they would be as bright and clear as they could be. Did any of these remedies work? I can't be sure, but I'm a very healthy person today. Gracias, Abuela. Te quiero y te extraño.

So, now for the question. What home remedies did you have to endure?

Slogans

Here are a few:

Just do it (Nike)
Tastes great, less filling (Miller Lite)
Where's the beef? (Wendy's)

We've heard them and remembered them. Slogans are everywhere. If you had a slogan, what would it be?

Convince Me

I have traveled all over the United States, but I've never been out of the country. There are certain places I have in mind that I would love to visit, but never have. I've heard stories from a lot of you about your travels abroad. Which of these places do you think I should put at the top of my list?

Thursday, November 02, 2006

What are you listening to?

Yes, this is my favorite question. Everytime I post this, I discover some really good music. So, let me know, what are you listening to?

Urban Dictionary

Has someone ever told you, you were a dime? Or, that they were sprung? Or, have you ever been aggravated when someone types "kik" in an email and you have no idea what it means? Well, help has arrived. It's the Urban Dictionary, and it's here to translate what your kids say or sing. Check it out. It's pretty funny. Let us know what words you find interesting, or that you might use.

I never...

What is something you have always wanted to do but never have?

I've never jumped out of an airplane.

Thursday, October 26, 2006

What did they say?

There are certain people who just have a way with words. Their words are powerful and have a way of affecting you. They can move you to take action or affirm what you believe. One of the quotes I try to live by is, “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible,” by Walt Disney. What quotes do you love?

Sidetracked

Have you ever been in a never-ending meeting and actually heard Charlie Brown's teacher? That happens to me all of the time. Call it a short attention span or now as everyone says ADD. Whatever. The thing is, is that I seem to get sidetracked by the same stuff all the time. You know how it is. Let's say someone says something like team effort. I immediately start thinking about last night's baseball game, then to certain plays from the game, then to individual players, then to Albert Pujols, which of course makes me think of, well let's just stop there. :)

So, when you get sidetracked, what do YOU always think about?

Games

Everyone plays them. Admit it. You do. Do you play them with yourself, with family, friends? Are they on the computer or on a board? Are they games in the mind or of the mind? Tell us, what kinds of games do you love to play?

Sunday, October 22, 2006

Be annoying, just for fun.

I have quite a few strange things I like to do, just to annoy people. One of them is to sing really bad songs out loud, just so that the people around me, will get that song stuck in their heads. It's true. I do that. Some of the easiest songs to get stuck in people's heads are, "I've Been Working on the Railroad," "Copacabana," and "Feelings." Try one of them. You'll see.

So, here's the question: What other songs do you think I could use just to annoy people?

Fast Food?

Today, a group of us went to Wendys. There was one manager, and about 10 other people working there. You would have thought it would have been very quick, but no. Every person there was brand new, except for the manager. The manager was the only one who knew how to do anything. It was everyone else's first day. You can imagine the mess. The line was so long, everyone's orders were wrong, and to make it worse, everytime the manager grew frustrated with one of the new employees, he would yell at them, and send them to another section to see if they could figure out what to do there. Crazy.
What has been your craziest fast food experience?

Kara's Question

When Kara went to UM for a year in the '86-'87 time frame, there was a game that was played by the freshamn class, kind of a get-to-know-you mixer. It was a big game played on a field with the whole Freshamn class, and was kind of a game of tag. It may have a German name. Do any of the UM Alumni remember this?

Fantasies

Some fantasies are sweet and innocent for the most part, like having someone tell you really beautiful things, just to make you feel good. Others are straight and to the point, if you know what I mean. We all have them. But, if you were to act on them, could they live up to their potential? They can't, right? Everything is always more intense in our heads. What do you think?

Friday, October 13, 2006

Have you ever?

Recently, I experienced something I was too chicken to ever do-ride a "real" roller coaster. We went to Animal Kingdom with our youth group, and since I was surrounded by teenagers, there was no way I was going to back out. I was so nervous, my legs were literally shaking. While on the ride, I screamed my head off, and once it was all over, I realized, I loved it. I rode it 5 more times.

Anyone else have an experience that intimidated them so much they thought they would have never tried, but ended up loving it?

Top 5 Smells

Here are mine:

Royal Violets on a baby's head
The ocean
Cool Water on a man
That after the rain smell
New crayons

Is that true?

I teach a class on Wednesday nights to adults. Two of the questions I asked were, "Were you in an organization or team as a youth," and "What kind of uniform did you wear?" Of course I talked about band and the lovely uniform we had to wear. One of the men in the class said he was on the American High football team and graduated in 1986. This led to a some friendly banter about which school was better. He said they always beat us in football. I thought we beat them. Which is true?

Wednesday, October 11, 2006

We don't do that anymore

While attending my son's first baseball game, as a coach, I watched two little girls play. I realized that there are so many things that used to bring us joy as children. Unfortunately, we just don't have time for them anymore. What were they doing?
Here's a small list of what I saw in that hour:

running for no reason
playing with branches
drawing in the sand
shouting out nonsense words and laughing
running to the edge of the fence, just to make their parents crazy
eating ice cream very slowly and letting it drip all over them

I wonder if we start doing these things again, would make us as happy as we were then. Can you come up with anything else?

Monday, October 09, 2006

You Got it Like That!

Has anyone ever told you this? Maybe in different words. It's like when you've done something really well, or when everything just goes your way. How do YOU know you got it like that?

Help Wanted

Let's try something a little different. Post a topic, any topic, and I'll try to come up with something.

Friday, October 06, 2006

What do you REALLY want?

You can tell a lot about a person by listening to them talk about what they want. Because what you want comes out. It’s like a fire inside of you that you just can’t hide. I read this recently and it made me ask, “What do I want–REALLY want?” I thought I would make a list, it made me wonder what would be on yours.

Thursday, October 05, 2006

Who are you?

Have you ever wondered why you are so strange? I know I have. Turns out there is reason why I am. I am an INTJ. That's my score on the Myers Briggs test. I'm sure some of you out there have heard of this.

I would love to find out what some of you are. There is a modified and much shorter test here:

Let me know how you turn out and if it matches your personality. It has me down pat.

When Harry Met Sally

Remember the question raised by that movie, " "Can men and women ever truly be just friends?" What do you think? Can they?

Tuesday, October 03, 2006

When you find something you like...

Today, someone said, "Hey, when you find a haircut you like, you gotta hang on to it." I guess that's sort of true, unless you were one of the ones, like me, who had a typical 80's look going. But, it got me thinking. Is there anything that works for me, that I still hang on to? The only thing I could think of was my breakfast. I pretty much have to eat the same breakfast everyday. That's about it. But, what about you? What do you do that is tried and true?

Get Real

Do you ever get tired of saying, "fine" when people ask how you are doing? Ever want to tell the truth about what's really going on in your life? Imagine that conversation. "How are you?" "Well, I hate my job, my stomach hurts, my parents are sick, and my dog ran away."

Imagine if someone actually told you the truth about what was going on in their lives. What would you do?

Or, what about you? Are you honest enough with yourself to actually put the truth out there and get real? If not, why not?

Whatever happened to Saturday night?

Whatever happened to Saturday night? When you dressed up sharp and you felt alright. It don't seem the same since cosmic light came into my life and I thought I was divine. I used to go for a ride with a chick who'd go and listen to the music on the radio. A saxophone was blowing on a Rock and Roll Show and you climbed in the back and you really had a good time.
Cookie's no longer a virgin.

Happy Birthday Cathy.

The Best One

We have heard so many stories about what went on at parties. But which one was the best party of all time?

Around the Horn

Around the Horn is a sports show I like to watch. The host, Tony Reali, moderates discussions of various topics and awards points for good arguments. The awarding of points is done at the discretion of the host. In addition, he can punish them by muting contestants for 10 seconds, which also subtracts a point from their score. He can also subtract points for poor arguments or when contestants try to change the subject. Panelists are frequently rewarded by Reali with points for quoting pop culture movies, as long as they are on topic.

So, here's what we are going to do. Paula will be our host. She is the most straight-forward person I know. I will post the questions, she will moderate and award points. We will follow the same rules as the show, but instead of muting, your next comment will be deleted.

First word: What was the most memorable moment in one of our shows?

Friday, September 22, 2006

Your Favorite Song

No, this is not the same question. This time, tell us the song you loved to perform. It can be from Jazz, Marching, or Concert band. Make sure you tell us why.

It's Your Life Game

Here's our latest game, "It's Your Life." I will start us out with a question about an event or a person from the band. Whoever answers, will post the next question.

Name two trumpet soloists.

Celebrating Differences

Alright guys. This time, I need your help. I am planning another event, and I have no idea where to get started. The topic is, married couples celebrating each other's differences. What are some of these differences and how do you celebrate them?

Sweet Love

At Paula's party, I learned some interesting things about some of us. For example, Debby's husband, Tony brought up how George used the same song to prepare his date for a special night of love. :) What was it? "Sweet Love" by Anita Baker. I know. Funny.
What song always does that for you?

Greatest Moment

This morning, I was scrolling through the radio stations and I heard an interesting question. It was, "What is your greatest moment of all time?" The DJ's made sure to say that people couldn't give the obvious answer, like "the day my child was born." So, tell me, what is YOUR greatest moment of all time?

Sunday, September 10, 2006

Once upon a time...

It's story time! Here's how you can participate. I will start off the story, and you guys will continue. But, you may only answer by using a song lyric. Let's see how far the adventure will go.

One day, a group of old friends were

What will they think of next?

Then, let me know what you think.

Our VMA's

This year's VMA's were a little disappointing, but I still love watching them. I love hearing who the judges pick for best male/female artist, best new group, and so on. I agree with their choices sometimes, but a lot of the times I don't. On many occasions, I think that the nominees are wrong, and that they have missed some worthy talent.

Thinking back since the first one, I realized that there sure have been a lot of videos since MTV started on August 1, 1981. If you were a judge, which videos, since that first one aired, would you choose? What category would you put that video in and why?

What's it all about?

I have a confession to make. I have never been to Rocky Horror, nor have I ever seen the movie. Yes, it's crazy, but it's true. I have heard some of the songs, and I remember hearing the stories about what goes on there. I have even seen pictures of you guys dressed up, ready to perform, but I just don't get it. Why would you dress up? What went on there?

How "Important" is it to you?

Recently we received an advertisement for digital cable that stated "Connecting you to what's important in your life". I freaked out when I read it! "important", TV-to us, NO WAY! specially all those hundreds of channels. I don't get it. We live without cable, digital or whatever, satellite or any other kind of "special" television connection; our TV connection isn't the greatest (we get some local channels) and to be honest with you--we don't miss it. I recently asked my kids if they do and they said "not really". They hate all the commercials. We do, on the other hand, have a nice DVD and video collection (we get to watch what we want, when we want).

So, my question to you is...How important is television to you and your family and what do you like to watch?

Getting to Know You Game

Here's how to play. I'll start us out with a comparison. The next person to comment answers which of the two items he/she prefers and then follows up with a new comparison or question. Ready. Here we go.

ocean or pool?

Hello. Anyone Home?

Has anyone been watching the Marlins? Man, they are playing some ball! Tonight's game is incredible. Anibel Sanchez, a 22 year old rookie, just pitched a no-hitter. We won 2-0. The first rookie to do it since 2001. The Marlins are also only two down for the Wild Card. The sad thing is, when they show the stadium, there is no one there. Anyone up for a game?

Is there a difference?

Alex just turned 40. Sorry for bringing it up, buddy, but it's kind of freaking me out. It just hit me when I was getting him a card. Oh my God, Alex is 40! One of us is actually 40. Then, I started thinking, oh my God, some of us are over 40!!! Then, I was listening to the Today show, and they were talking about mid-life crises, and how both men and women go through them, but they go through them in totally different ways. Women become introspective and reflect on their lives and what they have always wanted to do. Men have a strong desire for attention. I'm not making this up. That's what they said.

So, here are my questions: Is there really a difference? And, here's the big one...are any of you going through this now?

What a weekend

This was such an awesome weekend. On Saturday, a group of band girls got together at Paula's house. What a time we had. We looked through Paula's yearbooks and took a walk down memory lane. Each picture helped us recall old stories. Then, on Monday, there was Alex's tailgate party. I'll quote Byron to sum it up, "What a trip." It was like 20 years had not gone by, high school all over again. If any of you have pictures, be sure to post them.

Got Some Cheese?

My brother and I were talking about things we used to say in high school, that people outside of Miami probably would have never said. For example, when he was in high school, they would say, "Got some cheese?" which really meant, "Do you have any good gossip?" You see, they were speaking Spanglish. I'll let you try and figure it out before I reveal where it comes from. But, there were so many things like this. Try ordering an Ironbeer soda in Hialeah in English. I did, and I was told they didn't have it, but when I asked for un Ironber, they quickly brought it over. Any more like this?

6 Degrees of What?!

Recently, when talking about the "good old days" someone told me that band was like one big orgy. This person said, that if a guy kissed a + b + c + d, and a girl kissed m + n + o + p, and so on, that eventually, this would lead to everyone kissing the same people. Strange, but I guess that makes sense. What do you think?

All Around Listener

What kind of a music lover are you? That's what I rated as in the title. Take this quiz:

and comment on the type of music lover you are.

What are you listening to?

This week, I am listening to:

Contra la Corriente Marc Anthony
A Song for You Michael Buble
Stay in Love Mon A Q
Yo Si Me Enamore Huey Dunbar
Inside Out Odyssey
The Most Beautiful Girl in the World Prince
Shy Guy Diana King
Mystic Love Los Pericos
Big Poppa Notorious B.I.G.
Just Dance Jamiroquai
All and all Joyce Sims

If you've never heard of some of these songs, listen to them. Expand your musical tastes. I'd love to do that. Tell me what you're listening to.

I Hate to Admit it, but...

There are things that each of us enjoys that we would hate to admit to anyone. Why? Because, we would be totally embarrassed by it. I will be the first to admit a couple of mine. I hate to admit it but I love orange juice and chocolate chip cookies. I know. That's not so bad. OK, here's another one. I hate to admit it but I love to go to a store, fill up my cart with stuff I want, and leave. Weird, but true. What do you hate to admit?

Reunion Chat

Tonight's the night! Our reunion chat will take place at 9:30 pm. If you would like to participate, there is still time. Just send a quick email to me or Cathy so that we can get your AIM address. No AIM address? Just go to aim.com and follow the steps. Hope to talk to you tonight.

Car Personality

I love being in my car. I love driving anywhere, listening to loud, old school music with the windows open, going very fast. It's awesome. There's such a freedom in being able to get in your car and go. But, my car does not reflect my personality. It is a gray, Nissan Altima, so not me.
I've often heard that cars reflect your personality. If that's true, then I should be driving a black, convertible Mercedes from the SL series. Oh yeah. That is so me. Does your car reflect your personality? If not, which one does?

What do you remember?

We are such an interesting group. We were so different in so many ways, and yet band brought us all together. I can distinctly remember certain aspects about each of you. I won't say what yet. How about you? What do you remember the most about someone who was in band?

The Big Crush

Recently, while talking to another band-ee, she mentioned how all of this talk of the old days, has caused her to think a lot about an old crush she had. She said something that I'm sure we can all identify with, " I had this overwhelming, all-consuming, totally unfufilled crush." I know I've been there. How about you? Tell us about your crush/es, and if you're brave, tell us who it was!

Nostalgia

According to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, the term "nostalgia" was originally coined by Johannes Hofer, a medical student in 1678 to refer to "the pain a sick person feels because he wishes to return to his native land, and fears never to see it again". Its original meaning--referring to a serious medical disorder--has been lost as the word nostalgia entered everyday language.

Cases resulting in death were known, and soldiers were sometimes successfully treated by being discharged and sent home. Receiving a diagnosis was, however, generally regarded as an insult. Cases of nostalgia, which sometimes occurred as epidemics, were less frequent when armies were victorious and more frequent when they suffered reverses.

Today, nostalgia is more commonly referred to as a feeling that any normal person can have. (Phew!) Nostalgia can often be associated with a fond childhood memory, seeing old friends, or a treasured personal object. How many of you are feeling nostalgic? What are your symptoms?

Where's George?

I'm glad I've been back in touch with many of you. I'm still wondering where George Mayor is? Have there been any George spottings? (and I also wanted to see if I could post)

Two Truths and a Lie...

I liked this one a lot and we had fun with it... you know the rules; though, wait a few days before posting the correct answer. Keep us guessing.

Incase you need a refesher:Here's how you play: Write two truths and one lie about yourself in random order and see if we can figure out which one is the lie. You may choose to write them based on your time in high school, or about your life.

Ginger or Mary Ann? (Celebrety Slugfest)

Sick, inquiring minds want to know and totally unrelated to band but who cares? So we can do this for guys and girls (and others....Mike). Let's alternate sitcoms and cartoons.

Guys
Round 1: Ginger, Mary Ann, or if your just sick Mrs. Howell
Round 2: Jessica (Roger Rabbits Girlfriend) vs. Lola (Bus Bunny's Girlfriend)
Round 3: Elly Mae Clampett vs. Daisy Duke,
Round 4: Belle, Little Mermaid, (or if your really sick) Sleeping Beauty
Round 5: Marsha Brady, Laurie Partridge, or Blair Warner (Facts of Life)
Round 6: Daphne vs. Velma
Finals! : Girls of Petticoat Junction vs. Girls of Hee Haw

Girls
Round 1: Skipper, Professor, Gilligan, or (if u b a golddigga) Mr. Howell
Round 2: Fred Flintstone, Barney Rubble, or the Great Gazoo
Round 3: Jethro Bodine vs. Bo and Luke Duke
Round 4: Aquaman, Batman, Superman, Shazam, Spiderman, or The Flash
Round 5: Richie Cunnigham, Potsie, or Ralph the Mouth
Round 6: Dick Tracey, GI Joe, Mr. Magoo, or The Hulk ;>
Finals! : The Brady Boys vs. The Partridge Family Boys

The thing about band...

How many times have you heard the word band geek and thought, they just don't understand? I think people have such a misconception about band and people in the band. If you had one chance to explain how awesome being in the band was, what would you say?

Psyche!

Anyone else remember saying that? I loved it. Psyche wasn't so bad. It just meant that someone lied to you or tried to trick you. But, pranks were worse, much worse. There sure were a lot of pranks played on people back then. Was one played on you that you can't believe you fell for? What were some of the best?

Perspective by John Bender

In the Breakfast Club, John Bender (Judd Nelson) states, "Being bad feels pretty good, huh?" When has this been true?

Is this us?

I read some interesting statistics about our generation, Generation X. We have been referred to as the "Slacker Generation," that grew up in the 'Me Generation' of the '80s. We are now able to see that it was not all it was cracked up to be. We grew up with the highest divorce rates ever and most of us were "latch-key kids." We have been described as "underemployed, overeducated, intensely private and unpredictable." We have a tendency to pick apart, often in minute detail, all aspects of life using half-understood pop psychology as a tool.

What parts of this definition do you think are acurate? Where do you think it is way off?

Top 5 Lies of the 80's

No idea what they are. Just like the title. Any suggestions?

Now that's a Funny Theory

Here's another crazy theory for you: First answer this question. What was your favorite cartoon character as a child? Well, the theory is that, now as an adult, you look for those qualities/traits of that character in your mate today. For example, one person I talked to said Patrick from SpongeBob. That would mean, that she likes guys who are kind of chubby, sweet, but a little on the dumb side. What do you think? Is this theory true?

S.O.A.P.

Snakes on a Plane. Does anyone else find this a totally ridiculous concept?! What is all the hype about? Why would someone want to see snakes on a plane? Why ARE there snakes on a plane? I don't get it. Maybe I will just have to see it for myself...

Plan B

My church meets in a movie theater. So, sometimes, things happen that are completely out of our control. This morning, I showed up for work at my usual time, 7:30 a.m. I was so excited. We were going to start a new series, and I was anxious to put our new set together. But, as soon as I walked in the door, I noticed something was wrong. There were no lights. Think of how dark a movie theater is when the movie is playing. Well, now imagine it that dark, without the movie.

Anyway, it was business as usual for us. We had to set up the four theaters we use for our children's ministry, in total darkness. It took us an extra hour, but we did it. FPL informed us there was no way they could have the power going by 10:00, so we came up with a plan B. We quickly brought in 3 generators to power up the main theater and the cafe. All of the kids (close to 100) went into the adult service. It was actually kind of nice.

Sometimes, we grudgingly have to go with a plan B, only to find out it's not so bad after all. When in your life have you been pleasantly surprised by a plan B.

Who wrote what???

I just got an email...I thought was kinda cool. The person told me what I signed in their yearbook. If you can dust it off and find some of the peoples writings...can you share? Did their wishes for you come true come true?? Was the message for your eyes only?? Was it a generic yearbook signing? Do tell.

Double Dutch Bus

We spent so much time on a bus. We went to games on Cheese Wagons and kicked it up a notch when we had long road trips. We didn't have dvd players like they have today for road trips. We had to be a little more creative. On one of the road trips, I remember that Byron played Superstar by Luther Vandross from Hialeah all the way to...that, I don't remember. But, it was for hours! No one even complained. I also remember everyone shouting, "See Ruby Falls!" What creative things do you remember being entertained by while riding on the bus?

Regrets?

A good friend of mine who shall remain unnamed (ok fine, Elliott Kampert) once told me:

"You will never regret what you've done, but you will probably regret what you didn't do"

Who has regrets over what they didn't do?? Or what they didn't say??

Computer Games

My sons have or have had every version of Playstation and Nintendo ever made. I have tried to play with them, but I can never figure out the function of each of the buttons on the controls. Usually, I'll sit there and just watch. It's incredible! Then, after awhile, I'll go into the, "when I was little, we played..." and talk about Pac Man, Frogger, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, and my favorite, Joust. They just laugh at the simplicity of these games, but man, were they fun. What do you think?

Reasons for People of the 80's to Feel Old

I came across this post on another blog. It was hilarious! One comment hit close to home, "I went to Tower Records to find Rio by Duran Duran, and the store attendant told me that "most of those CD's are in the oldies section". Ugh. That hurts. What have you seen or heard that makes you feel old?

What happened to all the Valley Girls?

Remember how popular Valley Girls were? So many girls tried to talk like them, they were in a lot of the 80's movies, heck, there was even a song featuring them. Well, what happened to them?

Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Well, isn't that special?

Since we've been getting together to talk, chatting it up in the chat rooms, and emailing back and forth, we've all learned some interesting things about each other. Joe told us that he's learned that we are a very positive group. I've learned that Kara and I work in the same field, Jeff is incredibly brave, Sonia attends the church that has its office right next to ours, and most of us are doing what we love! What interesting fact have you learned about one of us, since our little reunion?

HML Band Alumni Web Site Update

Hey Gang!

There are three new sets of pictures in the Gallery from Kara Allaire (Madden), Gina Darmanin, and Justine Hyle. Additionally, there are previews as to what pictures are in the pipe to be loaded.

As far as the new blog goes, I have installed the blogging engine and and have done some configuration. Fairly soon (probably within 2 weeks) we shall need to start thinking about a cutover date to give me some time to convert over the existing content to the new blogsite so nothing is lost. But more on that as we get closer and we've had some time to work out the kinks!

Enjoy! E!

My best move

Some people are really good flirts. We have some who were in band. I, on the other hand, have no clue when it comes to this. The funny thing is, is that with my job, people come to me and ask me for help all the time. So, I've taken to studying body language. And, from what I've seen people do some strange things when it comes to flirting. What is your best move?

My favorite things

Oprah has her list. Here is mine:

music-any kind, but done well.

M & M's-only plain

beautiful shoes-it doesn't matter if they hurt

baseball

the beach

So, what are your top 5 favorite things?

Fun-doo-doo

As a teenager, my sister Lisa, loved to talk on the phone. She talked with all kinds of people, for all hours of the day and night. One guy she talked to had the last name of Fundora. For some reason, we started referring to him as Fun-doo-doo. We just loved saying his name and laughing. I don't know why. One day, while saying his name over and over again, it started to rain. Of course, we attributed the rain to the two of us saying Fun-doo-doo many times. So, we decided that we would use this information again, when we needed it.

Well, the time came soon enough, while we were in band camp. We REALLY did not want to be there that day. It was too hot, Mr. K. was very grouchy, and we just wanted to go home. Lisa and I shared the history of the Fun-doo-doo with a select group of band-ees, who we knew didn't want to be there either. Along with the history, we added a ritual to the story. We said that in order for this to work, we had to lock pinkies, walk in a straight line, and repeat the word, Fun-doo-doo over and over again. To our amazement, they didn't think we were crazy, and actually thought it was worth a try. So, while Mr. K. was up on the observation tower, we tried it. We locked pinkies, walked across the field in a straight line, and said, "Fun-doo-doo, Fun-doo-doo" over and over again. And guess what? It rained. It poured. Band practice was cancelled, and we all went home, playing in the rain. It was awesome.

Of course, knowing now what the weather is like in Florida in the summer, it rained as it always does at 3:00. But, it sure was fun thinking we caused it. What have you done to get out of band practice? Were any of you a part of the Fun-doo-doo gang?

Things that sound REALLY weird if said outside of band.

May I inspect your instrument?

Have your tongue make light, quick movements.

Grease your valves.

Your fingering is off.

Any others?

People are always asking me how I come up with the stuff to post. So, I came up with an idea. While I was on the plane last night, a whole bunch of topics came to mind. I could write on each of them, but could any of you? Let's make it more interesting. Now, it's your turn.

Why Would I Want to Hang Out With You?

I talked to someone this morning, who shall remain nameless, and she brought up a good point. This person said that by reading this blog, she has no clue who we are today. She knows pretty much who we were then, but would like to know more about us now, like what we do, what we like and so on. So, here's the question: What makes you so interesting today? Briefly tell us one thing that makes us want to hang out with you.

Two Truths and a Lie

Perceptions. Someone told me right before the reunion that this was what high school was all about. This person nailed it. We each had certain perceptions of everyone else. Admit it. So, let's play a little game. It's called two truths and a lie. Here's how you play: Write two truths and one lie about yourself in random order and see if we can figure out which one is the lie. You may choose to write them based on your time in high school, or about your life today.

The Three Jorges

Who remembers the 3 Jorges? Everyone. Jorge Balleste, Jorge Perez, and George Mayor. Each of them is memorable for their own reasons. Some of these reasons have made them infamous. Two were present at the reunion. We never found George Mayor. Where is he? Can you name 3 other famous Jorges (or Georges)?

Pizza and Corn

I was thinking today about school lunch. Why is it that they always served pizza and corn? You know, to this day, this still do that? Where is it written that pizza and corn should go together? Why would you even serve them at the same time? Weird.

Thinking along those lines, it made me think of other strange combinations in high school that I would never picture working together, but did. What two things would you never work together, but oddly enough wouldn't seem the same if they weren't paired?

Best in Show

Gina's pictures have brought back so many memories of our performances. Who remembers standing as straight as possible until your back ached, and exaggerating each roll-step as much as possible until you got toe cramps? Byron told us we had to do this so our upper body would be still when we played. Or even high-stepping and making sure our toe was even with our knee? It was amazing how we mainitained our formations and remembered every note to our music. Now that's multi-tasking! I remember feeling so proud after our drum majors performed their "welcome routine" or when one of our soloists brought the house down.

The one show I remember the most because of its details was show where we had a lollipop-type paddle with a different color on each side, we used our capes like wings for a flash of color for the judges, and the band members put down their instruments and caught flags tossed to them by the color guard. I don't remember what song we played, but I believe all of this took place during the drum solo. What a show.

Guys Just Don't do That!

A group of us were talking in a chat room last night, and we came to realize that there are some things that a girl would do, that a guy would definitely NOT do. Here are a couple we came up with:

Two guys will not share the same umbrella.
Guys do not take their shoes off to run in the rain.
A guy would not compliment a friend of the same sex on their looks.

Are these true? Is there anything else that a guy would definitely not do?

Comfort Foods

OK, I almost hate to admit this, but felt it would be an interesting post...I just had dinner: Tostitos and Chocolate chip cookies and a glass of orange juice. YUM...nutritious. I know we ALL do this and so do you guys, too. So, what are some of your faves, crazy concoctions, binges or midnite munchies?

Pictures from E!

Hey Gang!

Before I give out this URL...I just threw these pictures up to the site, which will end up being our new website...just a note: I did this quick and dirty to get the pictures out. The final website will look nothing like this and will be quite the elegant site...so no griping allowed ;>

Enjoy, E!

TRUTH

Alright. It's back, by popular demand. The Truth Game. Here goes. Each person is given one pass card. You can toss it in whenever you like. All you have to do is type in "Pass Card." You only get one pass, so use it wisely. Each of us will ask one question, any question in the world, about anything. Each of us MUST answer that person's question. No hiding and not commenting. Just answer it. As soon as each of us answers the question, the next person asks.
How will we know who gets to ask the next question?? Well, we won't. It's basically whoever comes up with it.
Question:
What is the biggest misconception people had about you in high school?

Music Notes

Do you remember how we wrote notes during every class and passed them back and forth to each other all day long? We used all sorts of shorthand like, BFF, ttyl, LLL, NNN, and so on. There was also a lot of code in them, just in case one of these notes got into the wrong hands! Of course, most of our writings were about boys, so I'm not going to get into any of those secret codes. Some of you guys are reading here now. But, there was also a lot of talk about music and concerts. There was mention of all kinds of bands. What concerts did you go to in the 80's? Which ones were your favorites? Why?

Workin' for the Weekend

I was talking to this man recently about jobs we've had. He was telling me about one of his first jobs, and you'll never guess what it was. It is the nastiest job I've ever heard of. He had to shovel pig's lungs into this machine, so that it could be processed into hot dogs. He is about 20 years older than us, so I told him I don't know anyone my age who has had a job like that one. But, then again, I don't really know. Have any of you had a job as gross as this one? What has been the strangest thing you've done to make a buck?

DANGER LIST?

There is some talk going on about a Danger List and I was asked to Post this:
The night before the reunion, one of our former band-ees asked another one of us if they could escort them to the reunion as only a" FRIEND."!
The girl offered what one would think is the best turn down ever:? "I'm sorry, but I can't go with you. You are on my danger list!
"The guy didn't feel the least bit slighted. He actually felt proud. But, it does raise an interesting question.
Is there really such a thing as a danger list?? If so, who is on yours?

To Web Site or Not To Website

That be the question. Hey ya'all. So now there is lot's of activity on this Blog, lot's of content being found and shared, and new folks popping up every day. I have a question for everyone.

I shared at the reunion that I was thinking about starting a HML Band Alumni website with Blogging, Gallaries, Directory Services, annoucements and whatever you folks would like to see there.

So before I incur the expense to acquire a url and a hosting service capable of the potential traffic I want to make sure this is something you folks would like or is this blogspot sufficient. Having our own website would provide great flexibility for us since we'll "own" the content and design, be able to secure areas to members that we feel necessary, as well as allow us to continuing growing.

Thoughts and comments?

Here's more.....

Well, we know it's not a Band picture without a 'wacky' group shot!

OK, what are these guys up to NOW!

Our very own Rockin' DJ
---Thanks Mike!

Is it really one of the Belushi Bros...
nah.....it's Albert Parron ;)

Peter's "Truth" Question

I think Peter had the best question in our game of Truth that Saturday night. I've been thinking about it ever since. He asked, "Who are you really happy that showed and who do you wish would have come to the reunion?" Everyone pretty much had different answers with different reasons. I said I was really happy that Niki showed up, of course. And then I said that I wished Byron would have been there. Well, the next day he was there! Well, if it worked once, maybe it will work again. Who do you wish would have showed up at our reunion? Let's get the names on here. Maybe one of us will know where they are.

Where'd everybody go???

Come on people....cat got your tongue? Or are we still recovering? I've been trying to post pics, but for some reason they are not coming up....has anybody else tried? I've got nice ones and I know we had a paparazzi of cameras going off. Any suggestions on the easiest way to load them... CD or from computer?

Let's keep this going.......

Still our favorite section leader...

Things I loved at the reunion besides seeing everyone:

A huge group of people doing the Time Warp.

the MUSIC!!!

Singing the Alma Mater at the end.

Seeing everyone hang out together, just like the old days-no cliques.

Sleeping with Niki again. Thanks, Herman. :)

Watching our kids play together on Sunday.

Now, how about you?

Dominic's story...

OK people, Incase you were wondering... We've talked before in the blog about life's little challenges. Some are more obvious than others. We do not consider ours a challenge, it's just life... read on

THANK YOU * THANK YOU * THANK YOU *

Cookie and Cathy---Well, what can we say! You guys have pulled an amazing reunion together. All your hard work, wonderful creativity, and continued persistance has made this an event to remember. Sure we would have loved to have SEEN more people there, but we know they were; in our conversations, in our memories, in our slide show, in our hearts.

Eric---Hon, gotta thank you for my aches and pains...specially my lower back! I wouldn't trade it for anything right now. I didn't think the "BIG MOMMA" would come back to haunt me in some 20 years.
***please don't make me do that again ;}

Tim---Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I promised you a POST, so here you have it! ***don't worry there WILL be more---time to absorb everything right now***

Well, what happened?

It has been a whirlwind of activity these last two days, but it was well worth it. It was so wonderful to see everyone so happy just to be together again. Everyone has improved with age. I'll fill you in on some of the details, but I'll leave the really good stories to all of you. Of course, there are stories to tell. It WAS a band party.

It started out with plenty of "Oh, my God! Look who it is." Some people didn't recognize their old friends (Alfie!). Next, people looked at all of the things on our memorabilia table. Those things really started the memories flowing. While we ate, everyone voted for the different categories, like best section leader, most influential person, the funniest, and even the Wet Willy award. Then, Mike Berrios kicked it off with some incredible music. He made the party. We did not stop dancing. As a matter of fact, the party was so good, we went our time by an hour! We didn't want the night to stop, so we moved on to Flannigan's where we played a game of truth. We learned some interesting things about each other there. For example, we learned about Mike's previous employment, Eric and Peggy Sue, and Peter in the Daquiri Depot!

The fun continued at the picnic today. People were coming out of the woodwork. Bill Stadelmeyer, John Wargo, Joe Williams, Lydia and Isis Loyola (both are have married names), James Vanhorn, and even Byron Williams showed up, along with many others. We ate, talked, and brought back a lot of memories. The best part was, our kids became friends. Now that was surreal. It was a great weekend.

Warning!

To those of you attending the HML Band Reunion this Saturday, we have an urgent warning. It has been brought to my attention that there have been some MAJOR changes in the past 20 years. Some of us have gained quite a bit of weight, gotten a few wrinkles, and even noticed gravity take it's toll on our bodies. There are others, who have gray hair and some, yes it's true, have no hair at all. If you would like to warn any of us, before the actual event, now is your chance. Let us know what we should expect, so there will be no surprises.
Can't wait to see all of you, no matter how you look!

'Twas the Night Before the Reunion

'Twas the night before the reunion,
when all through the town
Everyone was stirring, and none with a frown;
The clothes were hung in the closet with care,
Thinking about the fit, and the optional underwear;
The bandees were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of friends danced in their heads;
Ladies with fresh polish, and men cleanly shaven,
Band in the mid 80's was their little haven,
Hey buddies, friends, and that former crush,
Watch Cookie to see, who still makes her blush;
In the past 20 years, we all may be scattered,
The experience we shared is something that mattered.
Some of us band geeks can't make this bash,
Has anyone checked Debby for her bass drum stash?
Heal toe, heal toe still rings through my head
Has "Band Sister" Cathy really found Fred?
Let's not forget the game of quarters
And Band Parents, our friends, and other supporters
Kara "Allure"put it best on the blog
How'd she remember, to me it's a fog
"We all walked into the awards ceremony with"..our 'ethnic diversity'
We stood proud and strong, with a touch of perversity
More rapid than time all old friends came,
Peter whistled, and shouted, and called us by name;
"Now, Drums! Now, Woodwinds! Now, Percussion and Brass!
On, Flags! On rifles! Hey Dancers, Move your ass!
To see OLD friends! To see their mates!
Now get some sleep! The reunion awaits!"

Family Day

You may have noticed that the location for our Family Day was changed. But, it is for the better. We were never happy with the shelter we had reserved orininally, but we kept on working on another option at Amelia Earhart Park. Believe me, it is for the best. So, our Family Day will be at Amelia Earhart Park in Shelter G on Sunday, July 16 from 11:00-Sunset.
Family Day is for your whole family. You may bring your children and parents. The more the merrier. We only ask that you pay an extra $5.00 to cover the cost of the food for each additional person.

One More Shot

Alright guys. I know I've already asked this question, but maybe some of you didn't see it in the May Archives. Our DJ is now asking that everyone post about their favorite songs from back in the day.
Think hard. Make it good.

Band Parents

If you check the archives, our band parents have been mentioned several times. They did so much for us, and helped us in so many ways. They helped us at night school with the snack bar, selling Christmas trees, at games and competitions, and they even walked through parades with us. Which band parent do you remember and why?

Also, we have quite a few of them attending on Sunday. Let us know if you know of a band parent we should invite.

If I knew then, what I know now...

Remember the movie Back to the Future? Marty McFly went back in time to change his family's future. What about you? If you had the Delorean, what year would you go back to? If you knew then, what you know now, what would you have done differently?

And there was this one time, at band camp...

Come on, now. You know when you heard that line in American Pie, you cracked up. And then, you instantly thought of some crazy stunt that was pulled in those long hours out on the field. Band camp was, for lack of a better word, different. What memory did it bring back for you? Was it, initiations, drill formations, or Mr. Walters running around the field pretending to be Benny Hill?

You wore, what?!

Alright guys, let me apologize from the get-go for this. I'm going to ask a fashion question on Father's Day.
Yesterday, Niki and Herman were sharing some of their pictures from our band days. And you know what? You guys sure have changed the way you dress. Back then, you used to wear really tight pants and cut-off shirts. Al, there was a fantastic picture of you with some parachute pants on. Whoa. I don't know how you ever sat down in those. What do you remember wearing that you hope hasn't been recorded on a picture somewhere? You'd be surprised at what will make the slide show at the reunion.

guess who we found now?

Well, after many attempts, we finally found Byron Williams. So far, it looks like he's going. Just one more to add to our growing list!

Tuesday, June 13, 2006

Just who are YOU?

What did you want to be when you grew up? Are you that now? Did you become something totally different from what you had in mind?

Places, places, places

It has been brought to my attention that a lot of us have lived in many places over the last 20 years. Have you moved far away only to return home again? Where have you been?

Sunday, June 11, 2006

It's nomination time.

Cathy would like to know if any of you have any ideas for awards for the reunion. Like, who is the funniest, has the most kids, who lives the farthest and so on. Please post any categories you would like to see awarded or email us your nominations.
Thanks.

You can't do that anymore!

As some of you have discovered, you can't go to the Forest anymore. It doesn't exist. It is now the Gratigny Expressway. But, did you know there are other things you can't do? For example, the HML band no longer plays at Milander. Milander is now called, "Ted Hendricks Stadium." Also, Byron can't drop his sax through the bleachers anymore. They put in new bleachers and that huge gap between the seats isn't there anymore. What else is there that has changed so much that we can no longer do?

Friday, June 09, 2006

What did you say?

People said some really strange things back then, didn't they? "Does anyone remember, "Hey little girl. Would you like some candy?" Or, how about, "Somebody lost their skivvies!" What do you remember people saying? Do you still remember why they said it?

Band Trips

St. Pete, Georgia, Washington, Opa Locka? What do you think was our BEST band trip and why?

Teachers

Who was your best teacher at HML? How about the worst? What turned out to be the most useful thing you learned while in high school?

Pictures, please

We are putting together a slide show. We need pictures. If you can, please scan them and email them to us. That's the easiest way.
Thanks.

Opinions Wanted

We were talking about lighting today, and were wondering if we should have bright or dim lights? How many of you would prefer it if we had dim lights? Seriously. How many of us are on diets right now because of this reunion?

In loving Memory!

Barrett, thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I, as I am sure with many others, were unaware that any of our extended family members had passed way!

In Loving and Fond Memories
of
Gerald Rolle
Class of 83
drum-line!
Please if you have heard that any other member of our extended family has past, please let us know by posting there names here.

Question from formally known:Debbie Williams

Does Anyone Remember "the Forest"?

Friday, June 02, 2006

WHO DO YOU WANT TO SEE AT THE REUNION?

GIVE ME THE NAME OF A PERSON THAT YOU WOULD LOVE TO SEE AT THE REUNION! Then let me know if you think I found Devon Woolcock!

Question from Alex Pujol

Who remembers "O.B.B.C"?

Thursday, June 01, 2006

Where's Fred?

Hey,
Does anyone remember Fred? I think he had four fingers on one hand. Has anyone seen him?

Stunted!

what were the top two stunts you witnessed while in band?

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

Who remembers Mr. K?

Should we invite him? Yeah or nay!
Just a little bit of facts, as father Carlos would say. Mr. K is only 45 years old. That means that he was in his early 20's when he was our instructor. No wonder we never took him seriously!

Found!

Alright guys,

Our resident "mack-mama" has found 3 more of our friends. Here are the latest people to be found:

Byron Williams
Tammi DeSoto
Alex Pujol

This is awesome, Cathy! Keep up the good work. She's still searching, so if you know that someone hasn't been contacted about this, please email Cathy or post their names here. Thanks.

I can't wait to see everyone.

Bring back the memories!

What was your funniest memory of your band years?

Question of the day

What three songs most remind you of your high school years?

Welcome everyone!

Hey,
This blog was created to inform everyone on the latest "goings-on" with our band reunion. You may forward this address to anyone former hml band member. This will help us get the word out more efficiently and help us keep in touch with old, or not so old friends.
Happy blogging!
